Employers urged to go further than DEI policies in promoting inclusion at work

Despite the popularity of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in Asia, a white paper from Randstad has urged to go further than that to address biases in the workplace.

"The mere existence of diversity, equality, and inclusive programmes is insufficient in making meaningful progress," the paper read.

"Other existing biases that we continue to see in the workforce include those against age and disability, just to name a few."

In Singapore, the Ministry of Manpower recently reported that incidences of discrimination among employees are at six per cent, while incidences of discrimination among jobseekers are at 23.4%.

In Hong Kong, a recent survey cited by Randstad also revealed that the majority of people with disabilities there have encountered significant obstacles in transitioning to the workforce.

Steps towards inclusion

Randstad's report stressed that fostering an inclusive workplace requires employers to foster an environment where every individual can bring their authentic selves to work and where differences are embraced and valued.

"Simple steps like implementing anti-discrimination policies, conducting awareness training, and establishing a common language for communication can help people take a more active role in breaking down barriers at work," the paper read.

"Using technologies such as translation software or making font types that are easier for dyslexic individuals to read and write can also facilitate better understanding and collaboration."

According to the paper, challenging biases takes time and requires a "multi-pronged approach."

"Although growing interest in diversity and inclusion is promising, it's critical to go beyond token gestures and tackle persistent modern workplace challenges," the paper read.
