Philippines 'emerging leader in corporate diversity and inclusion,' CEO says

Two-thirds of Philippine employers support LGBTQIA+ staff with special benefits

The Philippines is emerging as a leader in Southeast Asia for corporate diversity and inclusion, according to foundit, following findings that revealed "remarkable progress" on workplace diversity initiatives in the country.

Foundit's latest report revealed that 67% of employees in the Philippines report that their workplace supports LGBQIA+ staff with special benefits.

This includes healthcare coverage, family and relationship benefits, mental health support, as well as training and education benefits.

"The Philippines is demonstrating remarkable progress in creating inclusive workplaces. It is particularly encouraging to see that 67% of companies offer special benefits for LGBTQIA+ employees, showcasing a deep commitment to inclusivity," said foundit CEO Sekhar Garisa in a statement.

"This positions the Philippines as a leader in the region for LGBTQIA+ support."

Workplace diversity progress

The Philippines' diversity progress also goes beyond its support for the LGBTQIA+, as the report also found that 62% of the respondents are able to define workplace diversity comprehensively.

Another 50% believe that their employers are highly or extremely committed to hiring a diverse team, and 58% perceive their organisations as responsive or highly responsive to feedback on diversity issues.

"These findings showcase the Philippines as an emerging leader in corporate diversity and inclusion," Garisa said. "As we look ahead, there's an exciting opportunity for Philippine businesses to leverage this strong foundation in workplace equality and lead the way for inclusive workplaces across the region."

Workplace diversity initiatives

Other initiatives from Philippine employers include offering diversity training programmes (50%), establishing employee resource groups on diversity and inclusion (62%), facilitating peer support and networking opportunities for diverse groups.

In terms of recruitment, the respondents also said their employers practice the following:

  • Conducting interviews in diversity-friendly spaces (18%)
  • Inviting applications from diverse communities (15%)
  • Consistent commitment to diversity hiring goals (14%)
  • Regular reviews to update hiring processes to mitigate bias (14%)

Applicants with disabilities are also offered specific accommodations, according to the respondents. They include providing:

  • Accessible online application processes (17%)
  • Accessible interview venues (16%)
  • Additional time allowances for assessments if needed (16%)

"The high awareness of employee resource groups and the prevalence of diversity training programs indicate that Philippine businesses are taking concrete steps towards fostering inclusive environments," Garisa said.

"As we move forward, there's a fantastic opportunity to build on this foundation, particularly in areas such as diversity hiring awareness and expanding training programs. Organisations that continue to invest in these areas will not only create more inclusive workplaces but also unlock new levels of innovation and competitiveness in the global market."
