Starbucks' headcount sinks globally – despite adding more stores

Starbucks' total headcount declined worldwide despite adding more stores in 2024.

In its latest annual filing, Starbucks revealed that it employed about 361,000 people worldwide as of September 29. This is down from the roughly 381,000 people that it employed in 2023.

The drop comes despite Starbucks adding more stores across the world, logging a total of 21,018 stores as of September 2024, up from the 19,592 a year ago.

In the United States, where most of Starbucks' stores operate, a total of 10,158 stores are open as of September 29, up from the 9,645 last year, according to the filing.

However, its headcount in the US sank to 211,000 people in 2024 from the 228,000 employees in 2023.

'Effective' workforce management

Despite these findings, Starbucks says its efforts in managing its workforce have been "effective."

"We believe our efforts in managing our workforce have been effective, evidenced by low turnover, a strong culture, and active employee participation," the filing read.

According to the filing, the company continues to invest in employees' mental, physical, and financial wellbeing through its practices, policies, and benefits.

"This work is grounded in the belief that we are at our best when we create inclusive, supportive, and welcoming environments, where we uplift one another with dignity, respect, and kindness," the report read.

Starbucks said its continued investment in the workforce includes offering competitive salaries and wages, as well as providing a wide range of benefits. In the US, the organisation said its benefits include:

  • Interest-free loans to UK employees to help cover rental deposits

  • Monthly housing subsidy for full-time Starbucks baristas and shift supervisors
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage for parents of employees
