DHL, Atlassian and Salesforce have been named as the best employers in the Asia-Pacific region according to the Great Place to Work Institute’s
Best Workplaces 2016 survey.
By gathering over 300,000 responses about more than 1,000 firms, the survey measured the quality of each workplace through an Employee Trust Index which gauged levels of trust, pride and solidarity in each organisation. Scores from this were added to a Culture Audit which examined the firm’s programs and policies.
For multinational corporations, the top five were DHL, Omnicom, Google, EMC and Marriott. IT firms took out four of the top ten spots among MNCs while hospitality companies took two slots.
Amongst large workplaces with over 500 employees, the top five firms were Atlassian, MECCA Brands (an Australian cosmetics retailer), RMSI (an Indian IT firm), Korea Airports and kikki.K (another Australian retailer).
In the small business category (those with less than 500 employees), the top five firms included the Singapore office of Salesforce followed by Australian firms Optiver, The Physio Co, The Entourage and Nous Group.
“These companies have an environment where there is camaraderie between colleagues, where management and employees have good working relationships, and this is what attracts employees to work at such places,” Evelyn Kwek, managing director at the Great Place to Work Institute Singapore, told
CNBC. “It’s beyond the paycheque.”
The survey also looked at the top five reasons why employees typically stay with their workplace. The following statements were most closely connected to an employee remaining at their job for a long period of time:
- Management handles the assignment and coordination of people well
- People look forward to coming to work each day
- I am given the resources and equipment to do my job
- Management genuinely seeks out and responds to suggestions or ideas
- This is a psychologically and emotionally healthy place to work
Overall, Singapore firms took up six per cent of the best places to work. Australia came out on top with a total of 33% of all listings while India came in second with 21%.
By industry, IT, financial services & insurance, and retail were the categories that contained the greatest numbers of best companies to work for.
