Wage guidelines: have your say

Singapore HR professionals are invited to have their say about the National Wages Council’s guidelines for 2015/6.

Annual wage and wage-related guidelines will be up for discussion when the National Wages Council (NWC) convenes this month and next.

And Singapore HR practitioners have the opportunity to contribute their views, with the NWC taking public submissions until 4 May.

The 2015/16 NWC will be chaired by DBS Group Holdings and DBS Bank chairman Peter Seach, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) announced yesterday.

Seah, who succeeds the 2014/5 chair Professor Lim Pin, previously served as the deputy chair, and also currently serves as the chairman of Singapore Health Services and LaSalle College of the Arts.

Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin said Seah has a wealth of experience and a distinguished record of service.

“I am confident in his chairmanship of the important work of the NWC.”
Tan also thanked Lim for his leadership of NWC over the years.

“Key milestones achieved during Professor Lim’s time as chairman included the introduction of more flexible incentives and bonuses tied to actual business performance.

“Under his leadership, the NWC in 2012 also introduced guidelines calling for a minimum built-in wage increase for low-wage workers, so as to better recognise their contributions.”

The Singapore National Employers’ Federation noted Seah stepped up to the helm during a critical time, with productivity falling and the economy forecast to slow down.

“We are confident that Mr Seah will steer the NWC on a steady course to raise wages in a sustainable manner,” the SNEF said.

The Ministry also yesterday announced the NWC would take public feedback into consideration when developing the guidelines, as well as looking at factors such as Singapore’s economic performance and competitiveness, labour market conditions, inflation, and productivity growth and the domestic and global economic outlook.

Feedback can be directed to the Secretary of the NWC through mail or email by 04 May.
