130 people fall ill to massive food poisoning incident in ByteDance Singapore office: reports

A total or 130 people became victims to a massive food poisoning incident at the office of TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, in Singapore on Tuesday, according to reports.

Channel News Asia (CAN) reported that 57 out of the 130 people who fell ill required medical attention in hospitals, with 17 of them still hospitalised as of Wednesday but in stable condition.

According to the report, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received requests for medical assistance at One Raffles Quay, ByteDance's office, on Tuesday.

Among the reported symptoms include abdominal pain and vomiting, the SCDF said.

A total of 17 ambulances were deployed to the office, The Straits Times reported.

According to the report, the SCDF also established a first-aid point at One Raffles Quay and evaluated other people who were experiencing symptoms.

A joint statement from the Singapore Food Agency and Ministry of Health said they suspect it to be gastroenteritis.

Investigation ongoing

A representative from ByteDance told The Straits Times that they are investigating the matter and are working with authorities on the case.

"We take the health and safety of our employees very seriously and have taken immediate steps to support all affected employees, including working with emergency services to provide care," the spokesperson told the news outlet.

In a statement to employees, ByteDance also said the buffet section at the company's canteen will be closed until the investigations are complete.

"We are taking this incident very seriously and are working closely with local authorities and caterers to identify the cause as soon as possible," the statement read as quoted by CNA.

According to reports, two catering operations have been suspended by health authorities until further notice as a result of the incident.
