Podcast: Connecting people with purpose: HR’s role in setting a culture of meaning

For HR leaders, it’s all about connecting people to purpose.

So says Dean Carter, chief people and purpose officer at Guild Education, in an episode of HRD Talk.

“Every single thing we do, in terms of the HR team, starts to set a culture of purpose, [the] need to understand purpose,” he says. “Fundamentally, it’s ‘Why does this company exist?’”

While some companies have a clear understanding of their purpose, this is not the story for others, he says in the HRD Talk episode titled: ‘Connecting people with purpose: HR’s role in setting a culture of meaning,’ available here.

“Once you get to that, then you do everything around that, everything matters to that.”

Carter also discussed how HR departments can attract and retain talent using corporate purpose and how to drive sustainability throughout the organization.

“Every single day, we talk about ‘How do we make decisions today, as if we were going to be here for 100 years?’”

This whole concept changes how decisions are made within organizations, he says.
